A Dwayne Lawrence double assisted Fruta Conquerors FC in crushing Police FC 5-0 in the latest action of the Namilco One Love Football Classic Friday night at the Tucville Playfield.
Played under soggy conditions and witnessed by a fair mass, the first half kicked off with conquerors outfit dominating the early exchanges. The resulting early domination almost led to the stalemate being broken, as a brilliantly worked move from the Tucville unit’s engine room went narrowly wide, much to the relief of the police backline.
The domination continued as the lawmen were creatively listless and forced to defend from the offensive pressure that was constantly applied by their opponents.
Desperate and at times unconventional methods from the police unit kept the Conquerors frontline led aptly by Lawrence at bay, as the minutes ticked along.
The conditions began to make their presence as felt as passing became an arduous task for both camps. Attacking from the wider areas through the marauding fullback runs of Delon Williams and Keith Fletcher, Conquerors were denied once again from taking the deserved lead as the resulting shot came crashing off the uprights, much to the disappointment of the partisan Tucville faithful.
At half time the teams were even.
The second phase began with both teams ‘off to the races’ trying to impose their will on the other. The resulting open manner played right into the Tucville unit’s hands as the gridlock was finally broken in the 67th minute compliments of an Eon Alleyne finish.
Proving to be the catalyst of the lawmen’s destruction and dictating the possession through their midfield duo of Alleyne and Jahal Greaves, Conquerors scored again in the 72nd minute through a clinical conversion from Edward Austin.
Under the pump for the lion’s share of the fixture, the lawmen began to throw bodies forward looking to find away back into proceedings, only to be easily nullified by the robust backline of the conquerors unit.
Continuing to push forward in attempts to consolidate their already imposing position, three further goals in the space of seven minutes led by exceptional finishing of Lawrence in the 83rd and 90th minutes with Nathan Walters adding his name to the scorer’s sheet in the 85th minute, effectively putting the game to bed.
In the opening fixture of the scheduled double header, the Guyana Defence Force FC overcame a gritty BV united 2-0 through strikes from Marlon Benjamin from a penalty spot in the second minute and Delwin Fraser in the 21st minute to book their semi-final spot.
Quarterfinal action continues on Sunday as New Amsterdam United tackles Santos FC and powerhouses Alpha United and Pele FC do battle in the feature event of the evening.
