Shamal Lewis’s first half penalty powered Bishops’ High School to a 1-0 victory over arch-rivals Queen’s College in a battle of the academics, as the Milo U20 football tournament continued at the Ministry of Education Ground Carifesta Avenue on Sunday.
Played in front a sizeable crowd, Bishops’ High, through their inspirational leader Lewis began proceedings at a fair clip as they dominated the early possession, pressing forward looking for the go ahead goal.
Behind the eight ball and unable to formulate a plan to counter the brilliant orchestration of Bishops’ playmaking skipper, the stalemate was broken in the seventh minute as the official awarded a penalty to Bishops with Lewis converting the resulting spot kick.
Struggling to produce chances, the Camp street boys were reduced to pedestrians as Lewis continuously dictated the Bishop’s forward charge, as the Carmichael street outfit went in search of consolidating their already advantageous position.
Reduced to unconventional and infrequent modes of attack, parity was almost restored on the stroke of lemon time, as a neatly worked move from the Queen’s midfielder was ruled just offside with Stephen Rutherford expertly finishing the move.
Disappointed by their first half showing, Queen’s College on the resumption began to push forward in their pursuit of equality. With both teams needing a positive result to progress to the knock out stages, the game erupted into a back and forth rhythm as both teams attacked ferociously.
Although they were getting the better of the exchanges, Bishops’ High was denied from adding to the score as a neatly worked move orchestrated by Lewis was brilliantly saved by the Queen’s College goalkeeper, producing a ripple of applause from the Queens fandom.
Desperate to find some form of creative output, Queen’s dynamic duo of Rutherford and Aftab Crandon cut frustrating figures as they were easily dispossessed by the unorthodox Bishops’ defenders.
Bishops’ High failed to score twice in quick successions as the Queen’s College goalkeeper valiantly kept his team in the game through his exemplary glove work.
In the other results of the day, Tutorial Secondary swamped St. John’s 4-0 compliments of a Teshawn Rodney double in the seventh and 68th minutes with Alston Walker and Steve Stunton the other goal scorers netting in the 13th and 74th minutes respectively while powerhouses South Ruimveldt overcame a dogged Cumming Lodge 3-1 with Steffon Enoe registering a double in the 18th and 48th minutes while Jermaine Beckles added to the cause in the 14th minute.
Aswald Washington was on target in a losing cause in the 57th minute.
