Gardener back behind bars after phone theft

Gardener Roy Singh, who was recently released from prison, will return there after he admitted yesterday to stealing a phone from his employer, who he claimed did not pay him.

Magistrate Judy Latchman sentenced Singh, 49, to a six-month jail term after he pleaded guilty to a charge of simple larceny.

Singh admitted that on February 11, at David Street, Kitty, he stole a Nokia phone, which was valued $15,500 and was the property of Amzad Hussein.

Police Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt told the court that Singh was recently released from prison. Singh, Hunt said, went to Hussein’s workplace, and the phone was stolen. When asked by the magistrate if the phone was recovered, the prosecutor responded in the negative and explained that Singh told the police officers that he sold the phone to someone for $1,500.

Addressing the court, Singh explained that he was employed by Hussein for three days at a church but he was not paid for his work. He also stated that his friend had given Hussein his phone as compensation when he heard about what had happened.

But Hussein told the court that he had left his phone charging when Singh approached him and asked about payment. He stated that he went to collect something to give him but when he went back, his phone was missing.
He stressed that he went in search of Singh for days and even hired persons to help him to find him. He added that when he found Singh, he tied him up and informed the Kitty Police Station.
