A man and a woman were yesterday charged with having shotgun ammunition that was allegedly found buried in their yard.
It is alleged that on February 16, at Kuru Kururu, Linden-Soesdyke Highway, farmer Louis Small, 58, and security guard Judy Perreira, 44, of Kuru Kururu, had in their possession four 12-gauge shotgun cartridges, although neither was the holder of a valid firearm licence.
At the Providence Magistrate’s Court, Prosecutor Shellon Daniels said that on the date in question, police received information and then travelled to Kuru Kururu, where they made checks on the premises.
She added that ranks stumbled upon an area in the back yard which appeared to be suspicious and they dug up a small portion and discovered the ammunition.
Both Small and Perreira pleaded not guilty. Attorney James Bond, who appeared for the couple, submitted that officers from the narcotics department were the ones who discovered the ammunition. He added that the officers’ original target was narcotics and not the cartridges.
The prosecution had no objections to bail, which Magistrate Leslie Sobers set at $75,000 for each of the accused.
The case was adjourned until May 22, when the trial is scheduled to begin.
