A man was yesterday charged with assaulting his common-law wife after she became suspicious about a phone call he received.
But Lionel Greaves pleaded not guilty to the unlawful assault of Nancy Brown when he was arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where Magistrate Judy Latchman was told that the victim sustained soft tissue trauma to the forehead.
It was alleged that Greaves committed the assault on February 17, at Cooper Street, Albouystown.
Greaves, when given a chance to give his account of what took place, said that his phone rang and Brown thought that it was a woman who was calling him. He said that she became upset and snatched his phone from him and ran. He added that he rode up the road and caught up with her at Sussex Street and retrieved his phone. He said that he never hit her; he just snatched his phone away from her.
Brown told the court that Greaves threatened to beat her up—an accusation he denied. She also said that on the day of the assault, Greaves had put all of her chairs outside and they were still soaking wet from rain.
Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt, asked by the magistrate to indicate the bodily harm that the woman suffered, said that Brown sustained several cuffs about her body and that she had a medical certificate showing that she had suffered soft tissue trauma to the forehead.
However, Hunt did not object to Greaves being granted bail, which was set at $40,000.
The case was adjourned until March 13.
