The PPP/C says it welcomes the 4th cycle of continuous registration by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) which commenced countrywide on January 21 to conclude on May 19 and has urged all those eligible to get registered.
Speaking at a party press conference on Monday at Freedom House, PPP/C executive members noted that the fact that 2013 marks the 60th anniversary of the achievement of universal adult suffrage was not lost on the party.
“… we fought for the right of every Guyanese of voting age, regardless of race, religion, class geographic location or political affiliation to be on the National Registrar of Registrants Data Base (NRRDB) so that they will be able to choose a government of their choice in free and fair elections,” the party said in a prepared statement.
The party said It is important to note that during the last period of continuous registration (the 3rd cycle), a number of persons waited for the last week to do their transactions which resulted in hundreds, if not thousands of eligible registrants, not being able to get registered.
“Many persons were left out because they did not possess their source documents, such as, birth certificates or in the case of those who had relocated from their original place of residence, could not complete their transfer to their current location.
“The PPP is urging all eligible Guyanese to visit the GECOM centre nearest to their residence and get themselves registered or to commence applying to the relevant agencies, if they do not have the required source document which they must possess in order to register,” the party said.
It noted that the ID card is a very important document which is necessary to conduct a number of critical transactions as a citizen.
The PPP said it has fielded scrutineers across the country and they are monitoring the process to ensure it is transparent and assisting Guyanese to get registered. “So far our figures have revealed that since the start of this current registration period, over 3,000 persons have already completed their transactions with GECOM. The party also reminded persons that the following transactions can be done at any GECOM centre during the current period of registration:
Teenagers who will be 14 years and over by June 30, 2013 and have never registered are eligible to do so now; corrections to particulars on ID Cards (name change, Spelling, Date of Birth etc); the Distribution of ID Cards for Registration done in June 2012; and replacement of ID Cards that were lost or damaged.
Noting that GECOM has established Permanent and Temporary centres in every Region, the PPP/C urged all Guyanese who still have outstanding transactions to do so at the earliest at the nearest GECOM centre in the area which they currently reside.
