Ten persons are now homeless after fire completely destroyed their two-storey home yesterday at No.79 village on the Corentyne.
The fire started sometime around 10:30 am at Lot 148 #79 village and rapidly engulfed the home. The fire did not allow the family to save anything of importance. So far the family suspects the fire to be of electrical origin.
Astrat Ali one of the occupants of the home told this newspaper that he went to the upper flat of the home to collect some money as he was about to go and buy lottery tickets. He said that when he entered the first room of the house to collect the money he did not have a chance as the fire was blazing already.
“I enter the room and all I see is fire”, he said. He noted that before he went upstairs he noticed that the Guyana Power Light wire connected to the house sparked. When he saw the fire growing in the room, he rushed out and screamed for fire. “I rushed out and hollered for fire!”
Ali said that after he screamed for fire he hurried to save his sick grandmother who was in the bottom flat. He said too, by the time, he got his grandmother out of the house and took her over to the neighbour the fire had already consumed the home. “Nothing was saved, we bought brand new wardrobes, chair set and gas cooker recently and nothing was saved”, he said in distress shaking his head. All he recovered from the fire were several pieces of silver.
Nazmoon Rampertab, 47, another occupant said that the family lost over 1.5 million dollars in the fire. She said too that at the time of the fire there was over $500000 in cash at the home. She explained that only on Tuesday they collected $400000 from the bank as they were planning to do some construction.
The woman added too, that they had complained to GPL several times about the exposed wire to the house, however the electricians at GPL came and looked after it, but it was still exposed.
The home was occupied by Allimoon Nessa, 67, Rampertab 74, Nazmoon Rampertab 47, Fanecia Ali 24, with her two children Siad, 3 years, Saif 2 months old, Astraf Ali, Alicia Ali, Angela Bachan, and Pooran Persaud.
The upper flat of the home was wooden and the bottom was concrete.
Investigations are ongoing.
