Action in the final three categories of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA)/ National Sports Commission (NSC) Mashramani Table Tennis Competition will continue tomorrow at the National Gymnasium beginning at 1700hrs (5pm).
The 21 and under Open category as well as the Men’s and Women’s singles will commencetomorrow evening. GTTA secretary Linden Johnson said that he expects the tournament to heat up as several seasoned campaigners have registered for the tournament.
Johnson stated that up to yesterday afternoon, he had already registered 32 players for the 21 and under Open category, 22 for the men’s singles and close to 10 for the women’s singles. Among the persons already signed up and ready to compete are 2012 National Singles Champion Nigel Bryan, Edinho Lewis and Joel Alleyne for the men’s singles this year. Johnson said that he is expected US based twins Brad and Brandon Belle, who are currently in the country to compete in both the Men’s singles and the 21 and under Open category. According to Johnson 2012 National women’s champion Trenace Lowe, who is also a past winner of this tournament, is also in the country and may be competing. Paul Meusa is the defending champion of the men’s singles at this event while Jodie Ann Blake captured the women’s singles title last year.
Top juniors Shemar Britton and Chelsea Edghill are also expected to step up to compete in the senior categories according to Johnson. Britton, who is just 14 captured the boys 18 and under and 15 and under titles in day three of this tournament last Sunday. Edghill also made light work of the competition in the girls 18 and under category and told Stabroek Sport that she was looking forward to competing in the senior category where opponents will actually be more of a challenge for her. The tournament is will break from Mashramani celebrations on Saturday and conclude on Sunday with the finals of the senior categories.
