Soldier, trucker charged with killing teens

Two drivers, including a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Lieutenant, were charged yesterday with causing the deaths of two teens through dangerous driving in separate incidents.

At the Mahaica Magistrate’s Court, Lieutenant Allister Burke, 26, of Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara,

was charged with causing death of Troy Fraser, 13, of Airy Hall, Mahaicony, through dangerous driving on February 16, police said.

Burke, who appeared before Magistrate Clive Nurse, pleaded not guilty and was remanded to prison until March 11, 2013.

Fraser was standing on a parapet waiting to cross the road when he met his demise. It is alleged that the driver was drag-racing when he lost control of the vehicle and hit the boy.

Meanwhile, Rajendra Bisram, 24, of Bush Lot, Corentyne, was also charged with causing death by dangerous driving. The charge came following an investigation into a fatal accident that occurred on Wednesday at Manchester, Corentyne that claimed the life of Zani Munroe, 15, of Liverpool, Corentyne.

Bisram was behind the wheel of a truck, GLL 8938, owned by a contractor from Friendship, when he hit Munroe and threw her off her bicycle. The truck then ran over Munroe. The driver was allegedly speeding at the time the accident the occurred.

Bisram appeared before Magistrate Krishndat Persaud at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court and was placed in $1M bail. The case will continue on March 19.
