(Trinidad Guardian) Two illegal immigrants from Nigeria were arrested on Thursday after the seizure of almost TT$1 million in cocaine. According to reports, officers of the Organised Crime, Narcotics and Firearms Bureau (OCNFB) went to a guest house in Chaguanas where they arrested the Nigerian nationals, aged 29 and 32.
Police said while searching the two, they found 12 handbags which contained a plastic package of cocaine each. The total weight of the drugs was two kilos. The suspects told police they were waiting at the guest house for a courier who would take the handbags and export them to Europe and North America.
After further checks, police learnt the Nigerians had overstayed their time in the country. They told investigators they had arrived in Trinidad more than a year ago and had been staying at a housing development in central Trinidad. They were later charged with drug trafficking and immigration offences and are expected to appear in the Chaguanas Magistrates Court on Monday.
Meanwhile, four men were arrested by police on Thursday evening at Maracas Bay after police found a loaded illegal gun in their car. Police said they stopped the car after the men started behaving suspiciously, and when they searched it they found a 9mm pistol with 17 rounds of ammunition and a magazine. The gun was seized and the men detained for questioning.
