A man was early yesterday morning shot and wounded while attempting to fight off armed robbers who had invaded his mining camp at Arakaka, North West District demanding gold.
Police in a press release identified the injured man as Christopher Mann, 26, of Bon Fim, Brazil, and the administrator of Gold Mines Corporation.
The release stated that at around 03:00 hrs Mann was in a mining camp at Arakaka when he was confronted by two men who demanded gold. A scuffle ensued during which he was shot to his body by the men who escaped.
Mann is at the Matthews Ridge Hospital, the release said adding that efforts were being made to have him transported to Georgetown for further medical attention. Stabroek News was later able to confirm that the man did arrive at the Georgetown Hospital and was said to be undergoing surgery. It is unclear what his condition is but this newspaper was told that he was shot in the chest.
Initial investigations, the police said, have revealed that the armed security guard at the mining camp, who is attached to a private security service, was reported to have been attacked and his .38 revolver and six rounds taken away by his attackers.
Based on the information from police officials, no arrest have been made in the case.
