Dear Editor,
During the latter part of last year I travelled to New York from Guyana, only to become a victim of the EZjet fiasco. I was informed through the media that I may only receive a partial refund of the cost of my ticket. It is my view that the slackness and ineptness of the regulators of air transport in Guyana are a result of the lack of either knowledge about the air transport industry or an uncaring attitude towards the travelling Guyanese public.
On checking with the Delta Airlines office in New York on Friday, February 22, 2013, about flight information regarding a ticket bought in Guyana for my return home, I was told that I have to pay the sum of US$25 for my first suitcase of 50 pounds and the sum of US$35 for the second suitcase of the same weight. Also my allotted weight for my carry-on luggage is the regular 40lbs. I have been travelling extensively over the past seven years and have never had to pay for my first 50 pounds of luggage. I agree that due to the cost of airline operations the second suitcase payment may be justifiable under the prevailing circumstances within the industry.
It appears to me that Delta Airlines while advertising a lower fare is recouping its money by charging US$60 for the two suitcases. This appalling situation needs to be corrected and the absence of a national airline for Guyana is the genesis of the inherent problems. I need answers, and I hope I get them when I visit Delta Airlines office on my return to Guyana.
Yours faithfully,
Orin H Major
