Murder accused Dexter Marshall, who was on trial for the fatal 2010 Charlestown shooting of Mark Caesar, was yesterday found him not guilty by a jury.
The jury returned with a unanimous verdict and Justice Roxane George later told Marshall that he was extremely fortunate that he was found not guilty, since there was relatively strong evidence in the case.
Marshall was represented by attorney Hukumchand Parag.
State prosecutors Rhondel Weever and Natasha Backer led the state’s case against Marshall, who they say acted with another man in shooting Caesar, who later died while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital for several gunshot wounds.
During the trial, the prosecution had presented Caesar’s brother, Robin Jeffers, as an eyewitness in the case.
He had testified that on the day of the shooting, his brother was standing at the corner of Broad and Adelaide streets when two men with guns exited the back seat of a car that approached and they walked towards Caesar firing shots, which hit him, causing him to fall backwards.
After shooting Caesar, the two men got back into the car and escaped, he added.
Jeffers had identified the two men who exited the car as Marshall, who is called ‘Deckie,’ and a “skinny rasta man”.
But in his defence, Marshall had told the court, “I do not know anything about this crime. Nobody calls me ‘Deckie’.” He had also stated that he did not know Jeffers and was never associated with him.
