Dear Editor,
I would like to voice my dismay at the content of a news report in the Guyana Chronicle on February 15 captioned ‘Teenager tells court of introduction to commercial sex.’
In this report a graphic outline of the victim’s ordeal and the identification of the location of the facility where the victim was held temporarily were revealed. This to me is a clear indication of inexperienced reporting and poor editorial policy by the paper.
Such reckless journalism can expose hundreds of victims to further danger since Help and Shelter facilities are meant to be a secret in order to prevent perpetrators from locating their victims to either inflict further harm or to intimidate them. It also renews the pain of the victim all over again.
I trust that there will be better judgment in the future by the newspaper in sensitive cases such as the one that is the subject of this letter.
Yours faithfully,
Bevon Currie
