A man who pleaded guilty to the charge of simple larceny was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment when he yesterday appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
According to the facts of the case, on February 22, at Georgetown, Junior Adams stole one Blackberry phone valued $90,000, the property of Andrew Johnson.
Adams pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Judy Latchman.
Police Prosecutor Renetta Bentham told the court that on the said day the virtual complainant (VC) went with his uncle to Croal Street, when his uncle stopped his vehicle to speak with someone. She said that the VC also came out of the vehicle and left his phone charging in the vehicle.
Bentham further stated that as the VC was returning to the vehicle, he saw the accused put his hand into the vehicle, take the phone and run away. Also, as the VC was reporting the matter at the Stabroek Market police outpost, he saw the accused. The defendant was arrested and subsequently charged.
When given a chance to speak, Adams admitted that he did the crime.
When asked, Bentham told the court that the phone had not been recovered.
