Twenty-two units of blood were collected at the New Amsterdam Hospital during a recent outreach exercise conducted by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Berbice Regional Health Authority (BRHA).
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release, a range of other services were also offered, such as HIV testing and counselling, the checking of Body Mass Index (BMI), blood pressure and diabetes testing, Visual Inspection Using Acetic Acid (VIA) and blood grouping.
The exercise was part of the BRHA’s work programme which seeks to reach and provide services to persons who are unable to visit the hospital or other health care facilities. One aspect of the exercise is to visit the elderly and those that are bed-ridden in the region.
GINA said since the ministry started the outreach exercises, several hospitals countrywide have embarked on similar exercises independently.
