Republic Bank presents $1.7M to foundation for autistic children

The Step by Step Foundation recently received support for their autism programme from Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited through its community investment initiative the ‘Power to make a difference.’

A release from the bank said that the foundation, a locally registered charitable organisation, caters for the education and development needs of children with autism.
In 2011, it established the Step by Step School for autistic children.

The sponsorship cheque of $1,700,000 will provide the 15 enrolled children of the school with a thrice a year visit from a US medical practitioner specialising in autism, who will assess the children’s progress and monitor tutors’ performance.   It will also cover the annual tuition costs for one child and pay the salary of a tutor for a year.

Autism is a complex developmental disability resulting from a neurological disorder which can be detected during the first three years of a child’s life.

During the visits, the US medical practitioner will also assist the foundation to conduct assessments on potentially autistic children.
