One person has been positively identified as being part of the Mashramani Day attack that left Kumar Mohabir dead and his brother seriously wounded and the search is on for others, according to Crime Chief Seelall Persaud.
Stabroek News was told investigators are hoping that the suspect would be able to point out his accomplices. The suspect will be making a court appearance soon.
Persaud, when asked if others had been identified, said that investigators were “looking for other persons.” The suspect and another person were arrested in connection with the incident. It is unclear if the other person is still in police custody.
Meanwhile, a distraught Mohabir (only name), father of the victims, expressed a measure of satisfaction that his family will get some form of justice. He was hopeful that with the help of the suspect in custody, the others would be caught. He said that there are at least six other persons who participated in the attack. They all reportedly hail from one village.
“I would like to call on the police to get the others. Police got to do their job,” a grief-stricken Mohabir, who was finalising arrangements for his son’s funeral today, said via telephone.
He told Stabroek News that the incident has left him in pain.
The attack occurred on Vlissengen Road, between Barr Street and Shell Road, just after 7 pm on Saturday. In a statement, the police said investigations revealed that Kumar went to a bar to make a purchase but he became involved in an argument with a group of men, during which he was stabbed about his body with broken bottles. His brother, Navindra Mohabir, 30, went to his assistance and was also repeatedly stabbed.
The police said they were taken to a private hospital, where Navindra was treated and sent away, while Kumar later succumbed to his injuries. He died around 2:45 on Sunday morning.
A post-mortem examination done on Monday revealed that Kumar died of haemorrhagic shock, owing to the amount of blood he lost after being stabbed multiple times.
According to the reports reaching this newspaper, one of the men had reportedly accused Kumar, called ‘Duxie’ and ‘Firelink,’ of stepping on his toes and attacked him before at least six others joined in to batter him with broken beer bottles and a knife.
Navindra had told Stabroek News that he was not sure what transpired as all he saw was a man swinging at his brother. As a result, Kumar fell to the ground and the man began hitting him with a beer bottle. Thereafter others joined in.
By the time Navindra rushed to his brother’s aid, he was already unconscious and the attackers turned their attention to him. He said he screamed for persons to help but they all ran away and he singlehandedly lifted his brother from the scene to the corner of Pike and Vlissengen Road then ran to get his bus, which was parked at Alexander and Pike streets. The brothers had gone to the area to collect a tent.
