Though they boast the talent to ‘rule the roost’ on the West Demerara, Slingerz FC will have to tread cautiously when engaging a dangerous Uitvlugt United in the semi-finals of the Stag Beer West Side Mashramani Champion-ship Cup today in Den Amstel.
Fielding a precocious bunch of talented ball weavers led by the talented Jamaal Harvey, Uitvlugt United will be going into the match cognizant of their underdog status and tasked with the responsibility of reaching Sunday’s final and the chance to compete for the first prize of $500,000.
Standing in their way will be new kids on the block and tournament favourites Slingerz FC who are currently under the tutelage of the indomitable Gordon Brathwaite. Boasting a star studded team led by the always dangerous Dwain Jacobs; the Slingerz outfit will look to cement their status as the leading team on the West Demerara with a resounding result.
“I am confident in our ability and we will be going for the win. We have crossed the biggest hurdle which was our debut competitive fixture and if we play to our strengths and stick to the game plan we should be victorious,” Coach Brathwaite said.
“Uitvlugt is a good team and a powerhouse in their own right on the West Side and I expect a good game. We are the benchmark currently and anticipate them to come at us hard but I am expecting a good victory”, he added.
In the opening encounter of the tourney Dem Amstel, led by their attacking trident of hat trick heroes Travis Hilliman, Rondel Hutson and Prince Payne, will battle a robust Seawall United led by their inspirational captain Darius Garraway, nippy striker Clement Brown and the reliable Adrian Giddings between the uprights when action kicks off at 7pm.
