The mother of a 13-year-old girl is pleading for justice for her daughter who was allegedly sexually molested by the son of a senior official of the Guyana Police Force in December last year.
The woman says the incident occurred on December 23, 2012 and was reported the next day but nothing has been done apart from the police claiming that they are still investigating the matter.
The accused allegedly fondled the child while she was vacationing with her aunt during the Christmas holidays at the Linden/Soesdyke Highway.
The accused was a family friend but he was banned from visiting the girl’s parents’ home after an incident between him and his wife. He was not in contact with the child until the day of the incident.
When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer Ivelaw Whittaker said he would investigate the matter and as soon as he has information on the issue he would comment on it.
The child’s mother told Stabroek News that she had sent her daughter to spend the holiday with her aunt, who is married to the girl’s assailant, when the incident occurred. The child said while she was at her aunt’s, she asked her to assist the accused in putting up some blinds. The aunt retired to bed and left the child in the company of the accused.
The child later went to bed and the accused went and lay next to her and questioned her about another relative. The teenager said that during their conversation she smelled alcohol on the man’s breath.
The girl fell asleep, but awakened when the man wrapped his legs around her. He then removed the sheet she had covered with and fondled her.
The girl said she called out his name loudly, jumped out of bed and went to where her aunt was sleeping. The child said she told her aunt what had transpired the next day, because she was too afraid of the accused to do it the same night.
The aunt then called the child’s mother and took the child to her mother’s workplace where she related what had occurred.
A report was made to the police the same day – December 24.
The upset woman said the officer she spoke with at Brickdam Police Station told her they would be in contact with her. Contact was never made and she went back to the station on numerous occasions to inquire about the matter.
The woman also said that on her visits to the police station, she was told by the officer that the typing of the statement was not completed and that she had a lot of work to do, so she should return at a later date.
The statement was finally typed about two weeks ago.
Since then, nothing further has been heard and the police said they have more investigations to do, the mother added.
“I want them to deal with this issue strictly and him to be charged soon,” the child’s mother said.
She also said she feels the matter is being delayed at because the accused is the son of a top police officer.
