Marian Titans and the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) won titles on the opening day of the Hikers Hockey Club’s third annual junior tournament at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue on Saturday.
Defending champions Titans played unbeaten in the Under-13 competition scoring 19 goals without conceding a single goal in their march to retaining the Ark Pet Shop title.
Titans defeated St. Stanislaus 1-0 in an intense final after they had beaten teammates Harlem Shakers 3-0 in the semi-finals while St. Stanislaus edged out Hikers 1-0 in the other semi-final.
The James Service Centre under 16 category was also full of surprises, with GCC finishing the group stage undefeated and taking care of the Saints Silencers 2-0 in the semi-final.
The other semi-final featured the second and third placed finishers from the group stage with Old Fort proving too fast for the spirited Saints Sensations team prevailing 3-1.
The final lived up to expectations with the individual skill of a talented GCC side countered by the up tempo passing game of Old Fort.
In the end it was the individual brilliance of the Mc Kenzie brothers, Keon and Kareem that brought GCC its first boys under 16 title.
In the girls category GCC continued their winning ways, taking the title against a spirited Hikers team who have definitely narrowed the gap between the two sides over the past three years.
The Global Technology Schools tournament and the boys and girls Under-21 divisions were scheduled yesterday at the same venue to crown two days of intense competition in the Hikers two-day junior tournament.
