The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) is calling on store owners particularly along Regent Street to desist from sweeping debris from their stores into street drains, which is affecting the flow of waste water in these facilities.
The council said in a release yesterday that dust, bits of plastic and other packaging materials are usually swept into the drains by workers who are employed by these store owners.
In addition, the M&CC said workers of these very businesses can be seen washing the pavements in front of their stores, with soapy slippery liquid early in the mornings and as late as 09:00 hrs. This is causing much discomfiture to pedestrians, who must use these facilities and are thereby forced to walk in the wash and run the risk of slipping.
This is unlawful and the council is asking those who are involved in this practice to desist from it and to help keep the pavements and other thoroughfares free from all encumbrances, the release added.
Also, many citizens are still indulging in indiscriminate dumping of garbage in different sections of central commercial areas such as Water Street, Regent Street, and Robb Street.
The garbage dumping is breeding grounds for flies, rodents and roaches. The M&CC is thereby urging persons to “reflect on their actions and the hurt it is causing the environment and communities”, the release added.
