The Caribbean Community (Caricom) Secretariat will today lead the region in marking the start of the “International Year of Statistics.”
The Secretariat, through its Regional Statistics Programme, is collaborating with Member States to observe the global year-long celebration, which is being observed under the theme, “Statistics in Everyday Life; Let us Educate and Appreciate,” a Caricom release said yesterday.
The Secretariat will be hosting an official launch for its activities this morning at the Executive Lounge of the Caricom Secretariat Building at Turkeyen.
The release said that by celebrating statistics, the Secretariat aims “to promote and increase public awareness” through planned activities to help raise a greater appreciation for the many ways that statistics have helped improve quality of life and greatly advanced society.
It added that the Secretariat’s public awareness programme will have at its core, a focus on the region’s youth. Other areas in statistics, it said, will pivot around that core youth focus and will dovetail with activities to observe the 40th anniversary of Caricom.
The release also noted the overriding goals of dedicating an entire year to statistics are to increase public awareness of the power and far-reaching impact of statistics on all aspects of society; promote and nurture statistics as a profession, especially among young people; and promote creativity and development in the sciences of probability and statistics.
