A security guard was yesterday accused of chopping a man who he claimed stole his bicycle.
Zaman Deen, 47, was refused bail and remanded to prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on a charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm. Deen pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Judy Latchman. It was alleged that on March 3, at Georgetown, he chopped Mahendra Ramsingh’s leg. Attorney-at-law Paul Fung-a-Fat, who represented Deen, said that Ramsingh stole his client’s bicycle and then brought it back.
He further stated that Ramsingh again tried to steal the bicycle but Deen caught him. But the mother of Ramsingh, who was present at court, explained that Deen visited her house and told her that her son stole his bicycle. She stated that she told him to report the matter to the police station. She further stated that her son was knocking on her door when Deen came up her stairs and fired chops to his leg.
Police Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt objected to bail for Deen, citing the likelihood that he would tamper with Ramsingh since they live in the same area. When asked if he was willing to move out of the community, Deen responded in the affirmative, explaining that he could stay with a relative at Eccles, East Bank Demerara.
The presiding magistrate, however, refused bail and remanded him to prison until March 11.
