Landlord, tenant charged with threatening, abusing each other

A dispute between a landlord and his tenant yesterday landed them in court on charges that they threatened and verbally abused each other.

Both Roopnarine Tiwari and Dawn De Florimonte were released on $40,000 bail each after they both pleaded not guilty to charges against them when they appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation against Tiwari, 45, is that on March 2, at Princes Street, Lodge, he made use of threatening language to De Florimonte.

Police Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt said that Tiwari threatened to kick out De Florimonte and her children.

De Florimonte, when given a chance to address the court, said that Tiwari brought two men who posed as police officers and he threatened to kick her out.

She further stated that the men were not dressed in uniform nor did they show her their badges. She added that her children were scared because the men promised her that they would return to the premises if she did not move out.

Tiwari’s lawyer stated that the problem stemmed from De Florimonte’s failure to pay her rent.
Meanwhile, it was alleged that De Florimonte, on March 2, at Princes Street, Lodge, used abusive language to the annoyance of Tiwari. Police Prosecutor Renetta Betham told the court that De Florimonte used a series of expletives.

There were no objections to bail but Bentham asked that the court place Tiwari and De Florimonte on a bond to keep the peace, pending the determination of the cases.

Magistrate Latchman acceded to the prosecution’s request and set bail for the accused in the sum of $40,000 each.
Both matters will continue on March 11.
