TGH Pacesetters overcome Eagles for second straight win

Trinity Grid Holdings (TGH)Pacesetters third division side came together in the second half to overcome a much-improved Eagles side 77-66 last night at the Burnham Basketball Court during the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association’s (GABA) Super League.  After edging the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) by a mere three points on Monday night, Pacesetters won more convincingly this time around, riding a second half surge to put away the Eagles who had managed to lead at the end of the first quarter (17-15).

Eagles established themselves early with commendable ball movement and superb interior play by former Pacesetters forward Kadeem Jacobs. Jacobs, who ended with 14 points, proved to be too much for the Pacesetters’ low post defenders as he scored turnaround jumpers and hook shots to keep Eagles in the game.

Pacesetters’ 6’4 shooting guard Calvin Harding asserted himself once again last night, taking advantage of the smaller guards with aggressive drives to the basket. Harding finished with a team-high 16 points, most of which he scored in the first half. Tariq Cave also added 13 points for  Pacesetters who led 39-33 at half-time.

In the second half, former Saint Stanislaus College captain and star point guard Neil Gordon heated up for the Eagles. Gordon, who now plays at the shooting guard position, finished with a game-high 19 points including three three-point daggers that he swished late in the game to help his team close the deficit.

After assuming a comfortable 59-47 lead at the end of the third quarter, Pacesetter coach Robert Cadogan gave a few of his reserves some playing time and Quincy Dos Santos made the most of his opportunity.  Dos Santos finished the game with nine points in just over five minutes after scoring on four consecutive rundowns including two tightly contested transition layups. Pacesetters’ point guard Ruel Ritch was composed at the point guard position, facilitating and finding his players in the right positions all night. Rich did managed to cash in on two three-pointers during his eight points for the Pacesetters.

Pacesetters’first division team was also in competition last night against Melanie Patriots, but that game was still in progress at press time. The GABA Super League continues tomorrow night at the Burnham Basketball Court.
