T&T set Guyana big target after batsmen deliver

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Openers Lendl Simmons and Adrian Barath, along with Kieron Pollard hammered half-centuries as Trinidad and Tobago flexed their muscle against Guyana, on the penultimate day of their fourth round clash in the Regional Four-Day Championship here  yesterday.

Simmons top scored with 70 and Barath joined him with 56 at the top order before Pollard assaulted the Guyana bowlers in typically aggressive knock to bludgeon an unbeaten 54 from a mere 32 balls, to fire T&T to 251 for two declared in their second innings at Queen’s Park Oval.

Set an improbable 376 for victory, Guyana ended the day on 54 for one, still 322 runs adrift of their target heading into today’s final day.

Opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul was unbeaten on 27, and was accompanied by nightwatchman Devendra Bishoo on four.

Chanderpaul, the 16-year-old son of veteran left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul, put on 45 with West Indies batsman Assad Fudadin who made 19 before he was clean bowled by seamer Rayad Emrit.

Earlier, Guyana failed to add to their overnight 195 for nine as Ronsford Beaton was bowled first ball of the day by fast bowler Shannon Gabriel for seven.

With a lead of 124 runs on first innings, T&T went into overdrive as Simmons and Barath batted positively to ensure there were no early breakthroughs for Guyana.

Simmons struck six fours and a six in an innings lasting 171 balls and 237 minutes while Barath faced 134 deliveries in 216 minutes at the crease, and counted seven boundaries.

Barath fell just before tea, caught at point by substitute Shemroy Barrington off left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul and Simmons followed him seven overs later, caught at the wicket off off-spinner Narsingh Deonarine, at 165 for two.

However, that was the end of the success for Guyana as Pollard combined with Darren Bravo, who stroked an unbeaten 48, to put on 86 in an unbroken third wicket partnership.

Pollard belted three fours and four sixes while the left-handed Bravo hit a pair of fours and sixes off 60 balls.
