Alpha United Football Club coach Wayne `Wiggy’ Dover says that he will contest the post of president of the Guyana Football Coaches Association
when that association stages its annual general meeting and election of office bearers today.
The meeting will be held at the Umana Yana from 10am today.
Dover said the GFCA had been dormant for years and he felt that it was time to resuscitate the organization to help facilitate the development of the sport.
“I decided to run for office because over the years the since I became a coach, the institution has been left quiescent despite having good coaches and no one seems to want to take up the mantle of reanimating and restructuring the entity. This body is supposed to be an integral part in the development of the local game and it’s time we arrest the situation in regards to reviving the association,” said Dover.
Queried about his plans if successful in his bid for the top post of the GFCA, coach Dover stated that he plans to institute a three-phase blueprint that will seek to get all the coaches involved and to work in collaboration with the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), all sub associations, the business community and the Ministry of Sports in the facilitation and development of the coaches and more importantly the game in totality.
“The plan or way forward is to develop and implement a three-phase programme that would ensure progression and evolution in a holistic approach. The first or immediate step would to be to get all the coaches to become members of the organization as well as to seek cooperation from the various institutions inclusive of the GFF, the government, sub associations and the business populace in helping to develop the sport.
“The second step would be to organize and execute training seminars and courses with emphasis on teaching and evolving the coaches as to create a level playing field for progression on the local scene and provide the avenues and opportunities for coaches to become properly accredited, first at the local level then at the international level so that we can in the future we can always create a viable professional milieu for the coaches.”
Dover said that if successful, he would ensure that the institution does not revert back to its current state and would also work towards filling the current coaching vacancy that exists within the Golden Jaguars setup.
“If elected I don’t want the association to go back down the direction it is presently. I would steer and lead it in the right path so that it can reflect national football of Guyana in every sense.
In regards to the current opening that exists within the national setup, we would sit and have discussions on the way forward with recommendations on suitable candidates to be presented.
“As the coaches association we want to play a part in the solving of this situation and this opening gives us the opportunity to work with everyone to show that development of the local game should always be the priority.”
