A seven-year-old student of the Winfer Garden Primary is now a patient at the George-town Public Hospital after he was struck down on Thursday by a speeding motorcyclist who later fled the scene of the accident.
Injured is Aaron Austin of Lot 3777, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, who is a patient of the Paediatric Ward of the GPHC.
Aaron’s father Dwain Austin related to Stabroek News that at about 5:30pm, his son was riding a bicycle on the street when the speeding motorcyclist struck him down and then failed to render assistance.
Austin said that at about 5:45 pm on Thursday, he received a call from his brother who picked up the unconscious child from the scene of the accident and rushed him to the hospital where he later regained consciousness.
Shollanda Goodman, Aaron’s mother, told this newspaper that sometime later on Thursday evening she received information that her son was involved in an accident.
She said that doctors performed two CT-scans which showed that her son suffered no serious head injuries. Goodman stated that her son however suffered internal bleeding.
She said that based on eyewitness accounts, her son was riding in the corner of the road when he was catapulted into the air by the motorcyclist.
The mother said that the motorcyclist who resides in the Alberttown area was also thrown off his bike but managed to quickly escape. Goodman added that after eyewitnesses provided police with a clear identification of the assailant, she and Austin were escorted by the police to the home of the man who struck down their son. She added that a woman who she identified as the motorcyclist’s aunt came out and requested a search warrant from the police. The officers failed to produce the document and thus left the home just a few moments after their arrival.
They have since not heard anything about an arrest but Goodman said that on Saturday, the aunt of the motorcyclist visited the hospital and offered to compensate the family if charges are not pressed against her nephew.
Goodman said that her son is complaining about excruciating pain about his body and is being monitored by doctors and nurses.
