18 months jail for stealing CDs during traffic stop

Hoyte McLean will spend the next 18 months in jail after he admitted to stealing five CDs from a minibus after its driver was pulled over by the police.

Magistrate Alan Wilson handed down the sentence yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, after McLean, of Fifth Street, Alberttown, pleaded guilty, saying he did not wish to waste the court’s time.

According to the charge, on March 10, at Hadfield Street, Georgetown, McLean stole five compact discs (CDs). The CDs, which were the property of Steven Grant, were valued at $1,000 in total.

Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman told the court that Grant was driving his minibus along Hadfield Street when he was stopped by a traffic rank, who asked him to produce his documents, and he did so.

Blackman added that during this time, McLean took the opportunity and entered Grant’s bus and stole the five CDs. However, he said, McLean was caught in the act. The CDs were recovered on him and he was arrested and charged, at which point he admitted to committing the theft.

McLean, when asked by the magistrate if he had anything to say, stated that he did not want to waste the court’s time and asked for leniency.

When the magistrate then asked him if he wanted to go to jail for $1,000, he did not reply.

Blackman, however, also told the court that McLean is known for committing such crimes. The magistrate subsequently handed down the sentence.
