A Cevon’s Waste Management garbage truck burst into flames yesterday afternoon in the vicinity of Woolford Avenue, but no one was injured.
It is believed that garbage collectors might have picked up some combustible material that subsequently caught fire.
Manager of Cevon’s Morris Archer told Stabroek News that the truck had just finished picking up garbage at a school and was on Woolford Avenue when it burst into flames.
He said the men inside the truck said they saw suddenly saw fire coming from it. The fire service was called in and the blaze was put out.
Archer said it was possible that a lit cigarette butt that was picked up and ignited after it was mixed with other waste.
He also said that the entire truck is damaged and he does not know if it can be repaired, or if it has to be replaced.
