Sudesh Ramnarine, who admitted to beating his common-law wife with a piece of bamboo to force her to go home, was yesterday remanded to prison to await sentencing.
Ramnarine, 35, of Lot 70 New Hope, East Bank Demerara, pleaded guilty when he was arraigned before Magistrate Leslie Sobers at the Providence Magistrate’s Court on a charge of unlawful wounding.
The court was told that on March 9, at New Hope, Ramnarine, unlawfully and maliciously wounded Mohamattie Dickson.
Dickson, who was present, told the court that she and Ramnarine decided to go fishing at a stream in the community when he decided to turn back to go home. He later found her speaking with a vendor. “While I and the woman were talking, he walked up to me and said ‘Go long home.’ And I refused to.
Then he again said, ‘Go long home!’ Then [he] grab my hand and thump me behind my head a few times,” a shaken Dickson recalled.
Ramnarine then picked up a piece bamboo and began hitting her across her back and shoulders, causing visible injuries.
“Everything she said was true, but after I hit her she then attacked me and ran away. Please, Your Worship, I just want me and the wife work things out,” Ramnarine said.
Magistrate Sobers pointed out that it was wrong to hit Dickson in the first place, while adding that he not only caused her bodily pain but also embarrassment.
“Your Worship, it is not my wish to see him go to prison. All I need is two weeks to move out of his house. That is all I need right now,” Dickson later told the court.
Magistrate Sobers then remanded Ramnarine to prison until Friday, when he will hand down his sentence.
