A man and a woman were yesterday remanded to prison on a joint charge of narcotics possession after police claimed they found a quantity of cannabis during a search of their home.
It is alleged that Sean King and Gem Jacobs, on March 9, at their home at Aranaputa Village, North Rupununi, had 64 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking in their possession.
They pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to them by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
According to Police Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick, acting on information, police went to the home of King and Jacobs and conducted a search.
The search was conducted in the presence of the two accused and a white plastic bottle containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems, suspected to be cannabis, was found, he said.
He added that the couple was arrested, taken to the Annai Police Station and placed in custody.
Bostwick objected to bail in the light of the seriousness of the offence and the punishment it attracts.
King and Jacobs were subsequently remanded to prison until June 4, when the case will be called at the Lethem Magistrates’ Court.
