For the second time in less than a week Trinidad and Tobago’s cricketers proved their superiority over Guyana this time in the West Indies Cricket Board’s regional Super50 day/night encounter played at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad.
In the Regional four day game which ended on Saturday Trinidad won by 45 runs as Guyana chasing a target of 376 runs were dismissed for 331 thanks to a 65th first class century from the dependable Guyana and West Indies middle order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul. There was no Chanderpaul yesterday, that rock on which many of Guyana’s innings have been built on and it was left to spirited batting by two unlikely players for Guyana to even contemplate making a fist of it.
Batting first, Guyana struggled to post a competitive score and it was left to half centuries from skipper Christopher Barnwell and leg spinner Devendra Bishoo to see Guyana go past the 200-run mark after they were struggling at 94-6 at one stage.
Barnwell played a captain’s knock of 66, the top score (and later returned to grab a wicket) while Bishoo supported with an unbeaten 52 as Guyana sent in by Trinidad skipper Dwayne Bravo managed to crawl to 234 all out in their allotted overs.
Barnwell and Bishoo came together with Guyana in dire straights on 117-7 and added 107 runs for the eight wicket to pull their team out of trouble and help post a respectable score on what was a good wicket for batting.
Leon Johnson, 31, Ramnaresh Sarwan, 22 and opener Trevon Griffith 19 were the other principal scorers.
Kevon Cooper was the pick of the Trinidad bowlers with 3-33 from 10 overs while Bravo supported with 2-51 and Sunil Narine 2-46.
Trinidad in reply were led by opener Adrian Barath’s top score of 65 while Bravo made 32.
Most of the Trinidad batsmen had starts but failed to go on with opener Lendl Simmons and number three Justin Guillen each making 13 while danger man Kieron Pollard made 15 and Cooper 16.
Narine duly saw Trinidad home ending unbeaten on 28. With him was Yannic Cariah who was not out on eight.
Steven Jacobs was the pick of the Guyana bowlers with 3-39 while there was a wicket each for Barnwell, 1-18, Wintz, 1-24, Beaton, 1-52, Bishoo, 1-57 and Shadir 1-28.
