A policeman came in for high praise yesterday after he returned Canadian $10, 500 (approximately $2.1M Guyana currency) and a passport which he had found in a washroom at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri to its owner.
According to information from the police public relations department, around 4 pm Canadian-based Guyanese, Abdool Haleem, age 78 years went into a washroom at the airport.
At the time, the man was preparing to leave Guyana on a Caribbean Airlines flight.
He accidentally left the money and his passport in the washroom.
When he realized that he did not have his travel documents or money he began a frantic search. The police were also informed.
This newspaper understands that CID rank, Constable Alvin Fraser found the money and the passport in the washroom and immediately returned them to Haleem.
‘A’ Division commander Derrick Josiah in an invited comment praised the constable for his good deed and professionalism.
He told Stabroek News “we have decent people in the force.
As much as there are some delinquents we have credible people with integrity and dignity”. According to Josiah yesterday’s occurrence is one situation that proves this and one that has made the Force “very proud”.
Stabroek News was told that the elderly passenger subsequently boarded his flight and left Guyana.
This newspaper was unable to make contact with the rank who resumed his duties at the airport after his good deed.
