Ex-DDL driver accused of stealing molasses

Mohammed Hussein, a former driver for the Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL), was yesterday charged with stealing five gallons of molasses from the company.

Hussein, 46, pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and he was granted $70,000 bail.

It is alleged that on March 8, at Alexander Village, Mohammed stole approximately $11,000 worth of molasses that belonged to DDL.

Attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat, who represented Hussein, gave his client’s address as Lot 129 West Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara and said he is not a flight risk. He added that Hussein was a driver for DDL and he was fired as a result of the incident.

Fung-a-Fat asked that his client be admitted to bail in a reasonable sum. The prosecution had no objections to the man being granted bail, which was subsequently set at $70,000. The case was adjourned until March 19.
