Two men and a juvenile were yesterday remanded to prison on a charge that they were part of a large gang that robbed a man at knife-point at the Kitty Seawall on Sunday night.
At the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, Magi-strate Sueanna Lovell heard that Peter Smith, Jamal Letlow and the juvenile robbed Prince Griffith of a BlackBerry cell phone, valued at $40,000 as well as $2,420 cash. The three, who were unrepresented by counsel, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Police Prosecutor Denise Booker said Griffith was on the Kitty Seawall in the vicinity of Rupert Craig Highway around 10pm on Sunday when about 10 persons attacked him. One of them placed a knife to his neck and relieved him of his phone and cash, she said, while adding that Griffith was able to point out the accused to the police while the others escaped.
She also said that the phone was recovered on Peter Smith.
Booker objected to bail in light of the prevalence and nature of the offence. She said persons must be free to walk with their cell phones and handbags without being fearful that they might get robbed. She also told the court that Letlow has a previous matter of similar nature before the court. As a result, the three accused were all refused bail and remanded to prison until April 8.
