Two men who allegedly stole 10 gallons of diesel from their employer were yesterday placed on $50,000 bail each.
It is alleged that on March 11, at Camp Street seawall, Derrick Samaroo, 32, and Dory Dublin, 34, stole 10 gallons of diesel valued at $9,530, property of Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL).
They both pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to them by Magistrate Leron Daly.
Attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat, who represented both of the defendants, in his bail application told the court that Samaroo poses no risk of flight, since he resides at 330 Herstelling, East Bank Demerara and was a sales representative for DDL.
Fung-a-Fat said his other client Dublin is also not a flight risk since he lives at 31 First Field, Kaneville and was employed as a driver/salesman for DDL.
Counsel further advanced that on the day in question his clients were putting in gas for DDL, not stealing it. He asked that both Dublin and Samaroo be admitted to bail in a reasonable sum.
The magistrate granted the accused bail in the sum of $50,000 each.
Counsel contested the bail sum, stating that his clients cannot afford to pay that amount since as a result of the incident they were both fired from DDL.
The magistrate refused to grant a reduction and their bail remained at $50,000
Their case will be called again on March 20.
