A man was last evening robbed at gunpoint and shot to the leg mere minutes after worshipping at the First Assemblies of God Church.
Mohammed Nageer, aged 39, had just disembarked a minibus at the corner of Lamaha Street and Vlissengen Road when three armed young men rode up on bicycles.
Speaking to this newspaper as he was wheeled out of the Georgetown Public Hospital’s X-Ray department, the man confirmed that he had just left church and was on his way home.
It was as he was making his way home on foot that the men rode up on bicycles and demanded that he hand over his money.
He complied by giving them his wallet which had a small amount of cash and his bankcards and other documents but he was still shot.
At the time of the incident a policeman was passing in his vehicle and opened fire on the robbers who dropped their bikes and made good their escape.
However the police said that the assailants are known to them.
The police took a statement from the injured man and investigations are continuing.
Last week a man was beaten to death in Kitty.
A gang of youths was believed to be behind the killing. Two persons have since been charged.
