Sherwin Benjamin was on Tuesday remanded to prison after answering a charge that he stole eddoes and oranges from a vendor at the La Penitence Market.
Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court heard that on March 10, at La Penitence, Benjamin, 35, stole the ground provision and fruit in amounts valued at $12,000. The stolen items were the property of Baboram Boodnauth.
Benjamin, who was unrepresented by an attorney, pleaded not guilty.
Police Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt objected to bail and told the court that Benjamin had no fixed placed of abode and that he might not return to court if he were granted bail.
As a result, Benjamin was remanded to prison until March 19, when the case is to be heard again.
