The Guyana Police Force (GPF) male team on Sunday won the annual Joint Services road relay race which concluded at the Police Sport Club ground entrance.
The GPF team defeated the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) male team but the GDF female team reversed the decision in the female contest.
The race, over a distance of seven miles, started at the Austin Felix Training Collage proceed to the University of Guyana Access Road and concluded at the Police Sports Club ground entrance.
The GPF team consisting of Edward Da Silva, Dennis Horatio, Kevin Bayley and Jayon Johnson outclassed their opponents including the GDF team of Orwin Corlette, Tyson Bentick, Jamal Chisholm and James Ramadhin.
Bayley and Horatio, the two national athletes on the Police team, contributed to the win with Da Silva running an outstanding first leg giving his team an early lead in the race. The GPF team maintained its lead throughout the race and registered 36:48.58 seconds to finish unchallenged ahead of GDF (38:04.38 seconds) and the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) 44:37.43 seconds.
Coach of the GPF team, Lyndon Wilson, expressed his satisfaction and said they will be looking to retain the Joint Services Inter-Athletics Championship title in September.
The GDF female team of Morice Skeete, Ashantie Scott, Rebecca Alexander, Tiffany Smith, Carlita Atkinson and Donita Lyle, defeated the GPF female team of Tracey Moses, Shion Boyer, Tandika Burgess, Samantha Williams, Donna April and Stacey Wilson).
The GDF female team registered 46:54.88 seconds as Police finished second in 49:00.50 seconds.
Robert Chisholm coach of GDF told Stabroek Sport that his athletes were not engaged in full time training for the race adding that the performance on the day of event was not the best.
“Police had a better coordinated team which was stronger,” Chisholm said.
