Contractors involved in pipe-laying for GWI will be responsible for rectifying damage to private property

Dear Editor,

Guyana Water Incorporated wishes to respond to the letter titled ‘Are the roads and parapets dug up during GWI’s pipe-laying exercise to be fixed?’ published on Saturday March 9, 2013.

GWI thanks your publication for highlighting the letter and alerting the utility about the concerns regarding the Georgetown Sanitation Improvement Programme (GSIP).  On the subject of the reinstatement of bridges which were broken to accommodate works, the author stated that “GWI has not advised citizens whether these bridges will be repaired.”  This statement is incorrect.  The utility published in excess of 12 full-page advertisements in all daily newspapers which contained the following statement:  “any private property damaged will be reinstated by our contractors.”

Similar advisories were broadcast via radio, television and social media which clearly indicated that the contractors executing the pipe-laying exercise would be responsible for rectifying any damage to private property.

Further, the author indicated instances of inconvenience caused by the work associated with the Georgetown Sanitation Improvement Programme (GSIP).  GWI wishes to advise that all measures have been implemented to reduce the length of time in which customers will be inconvenienced.  The comfort and safety of our customers remains a priority.  GWI’s Health and Safety Unit continues to monitor all safety precautions and measures being executed at the various sites to ensure that customer safety is never compromised.

GWI expresses gratitude to your publication for highlighting the issues which affect our customers.  Should there be any further concerns about the GSIP, customers can contact GWI’s Customer Services Call Centre on 227-8701, e-mail customercallcentre@gwi.gy or post via social media: www.facebook.com/everydropcountsgy  More information on the GSIP can be found at gwiguyana.com or via GWI’s Youtube Channel.

Yours faithfully,
Timothy Austin
