Patricia Chase-Green was yesterday elected as the Deputy Mayor of Georgetown.
Chase-Green, who has been holding the post in an acting capacity since the passing of the former Deputy Mayor Robert Williams in January last year, received a majority 11 votes from councillors, while contender Llewellyn John managed to capture only six.
Chase-Green and John were the two councillors nominated for the position, after which councillors were asked to cast their ballots. The votes were counted by staff of the acting Town Clerk Carol Sooba.
Speaking shortly after her victory, Chase-Green said she intends to work assiduously with all councillors and that she is hoping that the City Council can move forward as a united force.
She also said that she, the Mayor and the councillors plan to sit and work out on how they will take City Hall forward, while noting that their main problem is garbage in the city.
Chase-Green stated that she was thankful to God for her win, while noting that she was able to conquer all the hurdles that came her way in reaching victory.
Prior to Chase-Green’s victory, her position as acting Deputy Mayor has been contested by other councillors, including John.
The City Council had noted in its announcement of the impending polls that the election is in keeping with the Municipal and District Councils Act, which states that if a vacancy should occur in the office of the deputy mayor prior to the retirement of the holder at the expiration of his term of office, the Town Clerk shall call a meeting to elect a councillor to the post. The law further states that the elected office bearer should hold that office for the unexpired portion of the term of office of the person whom he/she succeeds, at the expiration of which he/she should retire.
