The Ministry of Public Works has plans to upgrade and expand the East Bank Berbice Public Road under a loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), according to Minister Robeson Benn, who said works will commence in the first quarter of 2014.
In the meantime, Benn, who was at the time answering questions put to him by PPP/C parliamentarian Dr Vishnu Mahadeo in Thursday’s sitting of the National Assembly, said there are plans to have remedial work done during this year, to the tune of $20 million to bring the road to an acceptable standard.
Dr Mahadeo had asked the minister whether there are plans for the rehabilitation of the road and when this will commence and also if in the meantime remedial work will be done to relieve the situation.
Benn said a feasibility study and design of the road will begin this year and it is at the end of this that the estimated cost will be known since there are also plans to rehabilitate three other roads in the region.
