Miner beaten to death at Mahdia, money stolen

A young miner was early yesterday morning found lying dead on a roadway in central Mahdia and it is believed that he was beaten to death and relieved of a large amount of cash that he had on his person.

Up to late yesterday afternoon police had arrested two men in connection with the incident.
Police identified the dead man as Jewel Williams, 20, of Parishara Village, Rupununi.

Police said in the press release that they are “investigating the suspected murder” of the Amerindian male whose body was found at about 06:00 hrs with marks of violence to his head.

The body is at the Mahdia Hospital Mortuary, the release said.

A source told Stabroek News that Williams was a miner who worked on a dredge located about 25 miles from where he was found. The dredge is owned by his father. The source said the man’s body was found in the vicinity of the Digicel Store and the Hinds Hotel.

Stabroek News was told that a security guard who works close to where the incident occurred is among those in police custody as investigators suspect that he might have seen what had transpired or was in some way involved.

The source said that earlier in the day, Williams was seen “sporting” and had a large sum of money. According to the source, when the man was found, his shirt was wrapped around his neck.
Stabroek News was unable to make contact with the dead man’s family.
