Den Amstel and Uitvlugt on Friday evening recorded wins as the 18th annual Mayor’s Cup football tournament got underway at the Den Amstel ground.
Den Amstel defeated Riddim Squad while Uitvlugt got the better of Police FC respectively.
In the opening game, Uitvlugt defeated Police 2-0 with Delon Lanferman and Jamal Petty the goal scorers.
Lanferman opening the scoring in the 33rd minute while Petty netted in the 68th minute.
In the feature contest Riddim Squad went under also by a 0-2 margin with Jeffrey Perreira and Ronald Hutson netting in the 38th and 41st minutes respectively.
The competition continues this evening from 6.30pm at the same venue with two pulsating fixtures.
Billed as West Side versus Georgetown in the buildup by most football aficionados, kicking off the scheduled proceedings will be West Demerara outfit Stewartville taking on the Guyana Defence Force FC in a keenly anticipated showdown.
In the feature contest of the evening, new kids on the block and West Demerara powerhouses Slingerz FC will look to add to their budding reputation when they tackle a capable Northern Rangers outfit.
