I refer to the publication of an article by Iva Wharton, captioned `Matthias is the GFA candidate to contest GFF top post’ S.N. 10.03.13. Editor, I had publicly favoured Colonel Bruce Lovell as my choice for the presidency, of the Guyana Football Federation when the Ordinary Congress (Annual General Meeting) is convened on 12.04.13, since he has “no baggage from the past or hidden skeletons in his closet”. Surely, it would have been a “breath of fresh air”, in a new dispensation of the sport’s administration! Nevertheless, the will of the city’s football populace has spoken in a democratic and transparent manner which must be respected. The historic convening of a “Special General Members’ Meeting” on 09.03.13 to deal specifically with the nomination to the GFF top post, is indeed commendable.
And it should also be across the board for the remaining affiliates of the GFF! The nomination and seconding process ought to be decided by representatives of clubs, along with members of the Coaches Association.
It was woefully sad, that attorney-at-law and APNU parliamentarian, Joseph Harmon could have only secured a solitary vote, compliments of Alpha United! And on a disappointing note Colonel Bruce Lovell a mere two, not even from the Joint Services contemporary, Guyana Police Force! Does this bring into the equation the qualities of leadership of the GFA President, an army officer? Since Matthias was overwhelming favourite with nine of the 13 votes and 1 abstention! Why is it the largest constituency in football, Georgetown, rejected Harmon? “Food for thought”!
Meanwhile would it be a derailment of the nomination process, from a democratic and transparent perspective, if an association, i.e. Berbice, nominates, and or seconded a candidate within the prescribed timeframe, then convenes its AGM, thereafter and the executive is voted out?
And the incoming executive does not honour the nomination(s) or seconding, since there was no club involvement! How would the GFF executive deal with the issue? It is for this reason I had earlier alluded to the fact that the GFA’s process should be across the board!
, does the GFA in its entirety think that they have all the administrative capabilities to run the nation’s football? This I ask unreservedly and unapologetically, since their level of non-compromise is being displayed as a “badge of honour”! Which affiliate or association would support a GFA General Council mandate to make nominations for all positions of the GFF? Three Vice Presidents and two committee members”! Maybe this “height of tomfoolery” would be the perfect script a humorous satire `Something to Laugh About’ at Theatre Guild and definitely not the Cultural Centre!
