GSA serves off Toucan Industries Junior tourney tonight

Four-time Junior Caribbean squash champion Victoria Arjoon recently returned to Guyana and is expected to be in competition during the Toucan Industries Junior Skill Level Tournament which begins tonight at 18:00hrs at the Georgetown Club’s Squash Facility.

The 16-year old Arjoon, who is expected to represent Guyana this year at the Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Junior Caribbean Championships in July, returned from the US just last week. Arjoon is currently a sophomore at the St George School in Rhode Island, where she received an athletics scholarship to attend in 2011. Arjoon indicated her willingness to compete in this week’s tournament when Stabroek Sport caught up with her over the weekend.

The Toucan Industries Junior Skills Level Tournament is the Guyana Squash Association’s (GSA) second tournament of the year and follows the Bounty Farm Mash Handicap tournament. While the handicap tournament allows players of varying skill levels to play each other by attempting to create an even playing field, the format of this tournament will be to group players according to their skill level and have them compete against their counterparts.

Winner of the main draw of the Bounty Farm Mash Handicap tournament Jason Ray Khalil is expected to compete along with reigning Caribbean under 19 champion Mary Fung-A-Fat and Ashley deGroot. The tournament will also be used by the GSA to shortlist the squad of players to commence training for the Caribbean Junior Championships which will be held in Trinidad and Tobago this year. Guyana’s juniors have won the last eight overall team titles at the junior Caribbean championships.

The tournament will be for all junior players or beginners under 19-years-old.  The tournament will be played each night beginning at 18:00hrs and is expected to conclude on Sunday.
