The GWI is hosting a debating competition with students from UG’s Earth and Environmental Sciences faculty to observe World Water Day on Friday.
The International World Water Day Debating competition will be held with students from the Turkeyen Campus and will be broadcast on NCN from 7pm, a press release said. This year’s observance is being held under the theme ‘Inter-national Year of Water Cooperation.’
Housing and Water Minister Irfaan Ali lauded GWI’s continued focus on education particularly its debating competition which will highlight the issue of water resource management in Guyana. He also lauded this year’s team as water resource management is currently a topical issue worldwide.
Ali said there should be a national focus on the need for all water users to cooperate in the interest of managing this resource with the overarching aim being to protect and conserve vital freshwater resources. “I urge all Guyanese to view the broadcast of the debate as the students will be highlighting vital points regarding integrated water resource management,” he said, adding that “public education remains a priority as every GWI customer must be responsible for water management.”
According to the release a series of school visits were also planned for this week while the GWI will be giving away a prize to a lucky visitor to its Facebook fan page at www.facebook.com/everydropcounts.
