The Kennard Memorial Turf Club on Monday received sponsorship from the Berbice Bridge Incorporated for this Sunday’ Phagwah Horse Race meet at the Kennard memorial Turf Club, Bush Lot Corentyne.
The sponsorship, the sum of which was not disclosed, will cater for the entire B and Lower as well as the J, I and Lower races.
“Our aim is to make this event and the other two we are sponsoring on the KMTC calendar this year, bigger and better,” said Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Berbice Bridge Incorporated, Omdatt Samaroo, in handing over the cheque at the company’s Main Street, Georgetown boardroom.
Retired Chancellor of the Judiciary Cecil Kennard, who received the sponsorship on behalf of the club, thanked the sponsors.
“For the third time, the Berbice Bridge Inc. will be on board with KMTC, sponsoring three of our horserace meetings that’s on our calendar this year, beginning with the Phagwah meeting.”
He added:”As I have said before, sponsorship is necessary for the successful promotion of any event and we are very pleased with this gesture being shown by the Berbice Bridge Inc., as it helps to make the event a successful one.” Millions of dollars will be up for grabs at Sunday’s meet which will be run under the rules of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority.
According to a press release, in the event that there are less than five horses entered for any event, the club reserves the right to cancel or reframe the said event or reduce the prize money after consultation with the horse owners.
Owners of horses must pay at least $5,000 for each horse at the time of entry. If not paid the horses’ names would not appear on the official programme and the horse will not be permitted to run.
Five horses to start before a third placed prize will be paid and seven horses are needed to start before a fourth placed prize will be paid.
Kennard also received a trophy for the winner of the feature race which covers a distance of one mile and caters for horses classified B and Lower by the Guyana Horse Racing Authority (GHRA).
Other sponsors for the event include Giftland OfficeMax, N and S Mattai, Pomeroon Oil Company, Top Notch Auto Sales, Kanhai’s (Guyana) Electrical Agency, Demerara Distillers Limited, Ministry of Tourism and Mike’s Pharmacy.
